What is Wound Healing?

The body has an amazing ability to heal itself from a range of minor scrapes to serious cuts and sores. However, a simple sore can become a complex medical issue that requires specialized care. You may require the expertise of doctors and surgeons to treat non-healing wounds. With dedicated experts and advanced technology, our unit at wound healing can help you resume the normal activities of daily life.

Every individual and surgery is unique and thus requires a special skill of the plastic surgeon. You will benefit from an integrated approach to wound care to improve healing and reduce scarring of a large wound or a jagged scare that cannot be covered with the skin at the site. Our surgeons are the best in the region to provide you with customized treatment and determining which procedures will suit you best.

What are the Procedures Used to Treat and Heal Wounds?

Our doctors use multiples of procedures depending on the wound, its type, location, and the cause. Some of the procedures we use are:

  • Small wounds: We follow the traditional stitches methods or sutures to close wounds. But apart from basic suturing, our surgeons also practice the advanced suturing techniques by using a wide range of materials available, including:
    • Absorbable sutures
    • Adhesives
    • Synthetic sutures
    • Tape
  • Skin grafts: Our surgeon uses the skin grafting method, in which a piece of healthy skin from one part of the body is used to repair another area of the body. When our doctors find that there is a lack of adjacent skin to use, then they resort to the skin grafting method to cover and close wounds. The transparent, healthy skin, later on, heals in the new location. Burn victims are helped by skin grafting.
  • Tissue expansion: We use the latest advanced treatment for reconstructive surgery. This technique allows the normal skin to expand and cure congenital and post-trauma defects of the body. The stretched skin expands and then is enough to close the wound.
  • Flaps: During this procedure, the surgeon moves the skin, muscles, and bone from one part of the body to another. Using microsurgery, the flaps are kept alive with its own blood vessels and then reattached to the vessels in the new location.
  • Microsurgery: The plastic surgeons use an advanced operating microscope to move tissues from one part of the body to another distant part for reconstruction. Our plastic surgeons use precise microsurgical skills to reconstruct defects which result from amputated body parts, several malignant issues, and severed nerves or blood vessels to optimize functional outcome.
