Bariatric Surgery Procedures

Bariatric Surgery is a weight loss surgery performed over people who are severely overweight. It is a type of a laparoscopic surgery, which is a minimally invasive surgery that involves the use of a special instrument having a thin fibre optic light, magnifying lens and tiny television camera known as a Laparoscope to detect, examine, and treat various problems related to severe obesity and GI tract.

Some of the major bariatric surgery procedures performed at the Centre involves:

Gastric Bypass Also known as "Roux-en-Y" gastric bypass or RYGB is a minimally invasive surgery that is performed in two parts

    • Part 1: The surgeon staples your stomach, creating a small pouch of the stomach. This staple makes the stomach smaller, thereby producing less space food which makes you feel full sooner.
    • Part 2: The surgeon cuts the small intestine and attaches the lower part of it directly to the small stomach pouch. The food a person eats goes directly to the small intestine bypassing the stomach, so the body absorbs very few calories.

The surgery is performed using a laparoscope. A surgeon makes small incisions and inserts a thin laparoscope with a camera on its top, inside the body to perform surgery.

Advantages – A patient loses around 70-80% of their excess weight within two years, thereby resolving co-morbidities such as diabetes, sleep apnoea, hypertension, heart disease, and dyslipidemia very early.

  • Gastric Banding Surgery

The surgeon puts a small band around the top of the patient's upper part of the stomach by making small incisions in the abdomen. The band comes with a small balloon inside it that helps in controlling the elasticity of the band (how tight or loose the band is). The new stomach accepts a minimal amount of food. This surgery is performed with the aid of a laparoscope.

Advantages – no cutting and stapling of the stomach, calibrated pouch and stoma size, it is reversible, can be adjustable without operation, 1-2 days hospital stay.

  • Sleeve Gastrectomy

The surgery involves the removal of most of the stomach by resizing it. Only a narrow section of the upper part of the stomach is left which is in the shape of a sleeve and is called a gastric sleeve. The surgery limits the intake of food one can eat and also curb the hunger hormone, ghrelin.

Advantages – stomach reduced without loss of function, ideal for morbidly obese personality, 70-80% expected weight loss.
