What is Oocyte Freezing?

Egg freezing or oocyte freezing is mature oocyte cryopreservation, where women can save their ability to get pregnant in the future. The eggs harvested from your ovaries are unfertilized and frozen to be used later on. The frozen egg can be thawed and mixed with a sperm in a lab and later on implanted in your uterus. Our doctors can help you understand the process and help in making you decide whether this is the right method of fertility preservation for you.

Who is the Candidate for Oocyte Freezing?

If you are not ready to become pregnant but want to try it on at a later stage to get pregnant, then egg freezing might be an option.

Egg freezing doesn’t require sperm because the eggs aren’t fertilized before freezing and storage. You may need fertility drugs to ovulate multiple eggs for retrieval.

You might also consider egg freezing if:

  • You are suffering from a medical condition that affects your fertility, such as autoimmune diseases such as lupus, anemia, etc.
  • You might be undergoing cancer treatment or any other illness that affects your ability to get pregnant.
  • You are undergoing an IVF procedure, and for religious and ethical concerns, you want to freeze eggs.
  • You want to freeze eggs when you are younger and later on use it.
  • You want to conceive through a sperm donor, and until unless you find the right donor, you want to freeze the eggs.

What to Expect From the Procedure?

Before the Procedure

You may have to undergo different kinds of screening before the procedure, such as

  • Ovarian reserve testing: The doctor will analyze the quantity and quality of your eggs
  • Infectious disease screening: The doctor will screen you for diseases such as hepatitis B and C.

During the Procedure

  • Ovarian Stimulation: The woman is prescribed certain medications so that eggs are matured and eggs are prepared for fertilization. During her 2nd or 3rd day of the menstrual cycle, when the follicles look promising, then women will receive an injection of hCG, which aid in maturing the eggs.
  • Egg Retrieval: After the injection, egg retrieval will be scheduled, during which you will be placed under sedation, and eggs will be collected via an ultrasound-guided needle procedure.
  • Freezing: Your retrieved eggs will be harvested and then cooled to subzero temperatures to preserve them from future use. The eggs are instantly cooled by using the cryopreservation method so that ice crystals do not form inside the eggs during freezing. This whole procedure is called vitrification.

After the procedure

After the oocyte freezing, you can start your normal daily activities. The success of any procedure depends on various factors such as your age, cause of infertility, and previous treatment results.

Are there any Risks considered with the procedure?

  • A fever higher than 101.5F
  • Severe abdominal pain
