What is Laser-Assisted Hatching Treatment?

When fertilized eggs are kept in the lab for 2-5 days during the IVF procedure, this allows them to divide and create an embryo. This embryo is placed in the woman's womb to achieve pregnancy. After that, the protective shell called zona pellucida surrounds the embryo.

But for implantation to occur, this shell should break easily. In some cases, the outer layer of the embryo hardens, and this makes the hatching and implanting a challenging task. This is also one of the main causes of infertility in women.

During laser-assisted hatching, the doctor creates a small crack in the embryo using the latest technologies. The cracked embryo is then placed in the uterus in the hope that this leads to implantation. A successful implantation results in pregnancy.

When are the candidates for LAH?

An IVF procedure does not mean that you will have to undergo laser hatching. LAH might bring success in a certain type of couple who are undergoing the hardening of the embryos difficulty. The doctor will perform fertility checks and then will decide whether you should go for laser hatching or not.

The assisted laser hatching may improve the pregnancy rate in the following conditions:

  • If there have been cases of two or more failed IVF cycles.
  • If you have augmented FSH level
  • You have a poor quality embryo
  • If your age is 38 or older
  • Unexplained infertility

Usually, older women have a tendency to create hardened embryos shells. The same problem is demonstrated in women having an increased level of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). In this medical condition, the egg does not get attached to the womb.

Also, sometimes frozen eggs or frozen embryos have hard zona pellucida, which makes it difficult to get hatched and implantation.

What to Expect During the Laser-Assisted Hatching Technique?

Before the Procedure

You and your partner may have to undergo different kinds of screening before the procedure, such as

  • Ovarian reserve testing
  • Semen analysis
  • Infectious disease screening
  • Uterine exam

The woman will be taking birth control pills or injectable medication that may prevent the ovulation cycle before treatment. The doctor will help you regulate the ovulation so that eggs are not lost before the retrieval.

During the Procedure

The procedure usually involves several steps, including; ovarian stimulation, egg collection, sperm collection, fertilization, and embryo transfer. Generally, the whole cycle can take about two to three weeks, and if required, more than one cycle has to be undertaken.

  • When the follicles look promising, then women will receive an injection of hCG, which aid in maturing the eggs. After the injection, egg retrieval will be scheduled, during which you will be placed under sedation, and eggs will be collected via an ultrasound-guided needle procedure.
  • The semen of the man will be collected, and it will be washed using treatments, and then the eggs will be placed in a special culture for fertilization.
  • After fertilization, our embryologist will select the healthiest embryos.
  • After the third day of the IVF procedure, the LAH procedure will be carried out. We have a special lab where a breach is created in the zona pellucida. Laser technology enables a controlled approach and is one of the safest methods. We have a specialized technician that performs the procedure. The whole process takes a few minutes and requires uttermost precision and delicacy.
  • The embryo is then transferred to the uterus.

After the procedure

After the embryo transfer, you can start your normal daily activities. The success of any IVF procedure depends on various factors such as your age, cause of infertility, and previous treatment results.

What are the Advantages of LAH?

As the procedure does not require manual handling of the embryo, so there is a few chances of damaging them. The procedure is followed with the accuracy of the laser and thus boost the pregnancy outcomes.

Are there Risks Associated with LAH?

The risks are similar to IVF and ICSI.

  • Spotting
  • Embryo might get injured
  • Breast tenderness
  • Mild bloating
  • Mild cramping
  • Multiple births
  • Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, ovaries swells and becomes painful
  • Ectopic pregnancy

However, our expert and trained doctors will ensure that you do not suffer from any complex problems.
