What is Gynaecomastia?

Gynaecomastia also called “man boobs” is a medical condition which causes boys' and men's breasts to swell and become larger than normal. The medical condition is more common in teenage boys and older men.

What Causes Gynaecomastia?

There are several reasons for Gynaecomastia, such as:

  • Hormone imbalance: Imbalance between testosterone and oestrogen hormones causes the breast tissue to grow.
  • Obesity: Gynaecomastia is caused due to being overweight which causes increased levels of oestrogen, which results in the growth of the breast tissue.
  • Newborn baby boys: Usually, this condition disappears after the baby is born. It is due to the oestrogen passing through the placenta from the mother to the baby.
  • Puberty: At Puberty, there is hormonal imbalance, causing breast tissue to grow.
  • Older age: With increased age, men produce less testosterone, and with more fat, more oestrogen is produced.

Other causes

Other rare causes of gynaecomastia are:

  • side effects of some medicine
  • illegal drugs
  • intake of too much alcohol
  • kidney failure or liver disease
  • Klinefelter syndrome
  • lumps or infection in the testicles

What is the Procedure to Treat Gynaecomastia?

Our doctors will ask you about your medical, drug history and family medical history. The doctor will conduct some physical examinations that may include assessment of your breast tissue, abdomen and genitals. Your doctor may ask you to go for some tests that may include:

  • Blood tests
  • Mammograms

In addition, you may need testing depending on your initial test results, including:

  • Computerized tomography (CT) scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans
  • Testicular ultrasounds
  • Tissue biopsies

If the breast enlargement is caused by poor health, obesity, or excessive alcohol intake, then the doctor may advise you to go for a healthy diet and regular exercise to reduce breast size. If doctors determine that your breast are significant and will require surgery, then you can look for options such as:

  • Liposuction: The doctor will remove the breast fact but not necessarily the breast gland tissue.
  • Mastectomy: In this surgery, the doctor will remove the breast gland tissue. The doctor will make small incisions in the respective area. It will also take less recovery time.

What to Expect During the Gynaecomastia Surgery?

The surgery is usually carried by a surgeon under general or local anaesthesia. A tiny incision will be made by the surgeon on the chest wall, and the liposuction procedure will suck away excess fatty tissue. To remove the enlarged gland, an incision in areola will be made. The Reduction Procedure Male breast reduction surgery usually takes 90 Minutes. But sometimes, the patient may need an overnight hospital stay.

After the operation, the patient will be allowed to go home depending on the medical conditions. The doctor will advise on not to lift heavy objects and weights. To encourage good results, an elastic garment should be worn day and night.

Are there any risks with the procedure?

Generally, there are no significant long-term risks associated with this surgery. Some complications that may include are:

  • hematoma formation
  • infection, etc.

However, our trained and experienced doctors use advanced technology and their expertise to reduce these risks as much as possible.
