What is a Cataract Surgery?

Cataract surgery is a procedure where the doctors remove the lens of your eyes and in most places, replaces it with an artificial lens. Cataract surgery is a very common procedure and is generally safe, and is performed by an eye doctor (ophthalmologist) on an outpatient basis. That means you don’t have to stay in the hospital after the surgery.

Why do you need Cataract surgery?

Cataract surgery is performed by an ophthalmologist to treat opacities of lens. Cataracts can result in blurry vision and can augment glare from lights. If a cataract makes it impossible to perform day to day activities, then your doctor may suggest cataract surgery. The doctor may suggest you cataract surgery, if it makes difficult for your eye doctor to examine the back of your eye to look or treat other eye conditions, such as diabetic retinopathy or age-related macular degeneration.

What to Expect From the Procedure?

Before the Procedure

  • The doctor may instruct you not to eat anything 12 hours before cataract surgery.
  • Also, your doctor may advise you to temporarily stop taking any medication that could augment your risk of bleeding during the procedure.
  • Inform your doctor if you are taking any medications for prostate problems as that can interfere with cataract surgery.
  • The doctor may suggest Antibiotic eyedrops one or two days before the surgery.
  • Your doctor will perform a painless ultrasound test a week before the surgery, to measure the size and shape of your eye. This will help in determining the right type of lens implant (intraocular lens, or IOL).

During the procedure

  • Firstly, our doctor will administer anaesthetic eye drops to numb the eye so that the entire procedure is painless for you.
  • Next, the surgeon will remove the clouded lens, and a clear artificial lens is usually implanted.
  • Also, in some cases, a cataract may be removed by a doctor without implanting an artificial lens.

After the procedure

  • After cataract surgery, you can expect your vision to improve after a few days.
  • At first, your vision may be blurry as your eye heals and adjusts.
  • After the surgery, you may have to follow-up with your doctor the following week. And then you will have to visit the doctor to monitor healing.
  • The doctor may ask you to wear an eye patch or protective shield the day of surgery. You should not be rubbing or pushing on your eye.
  • The doctor may give you some eye drops to prevent infection and inflammation.
  • The complete healing occurs within eight weeks.

Are there any risks associated with the procedure?

Some of the Cataract surgery risks include:

  • Inflammation
  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Swelling
  • Drooping eyelid
  • Dislocation of artificial lens
  • Retinal detachment
  • Glaucoma
  • Secondary cataract
  • Loss of vision

The risk of any complications increases if you have any other eye diseases or any serious medical condition. However, our expert and trained doctors will ensure that you do not suffer from any complex problems.
