What is Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding?

Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) is a form of weight loss surgery that is performed as a laparoscopic surgery, where small incisions are made in the upper abdomen. The surgeon places an adjustable band around the top part of the stomach to make the stomach small. With the small pouch in your stomach, it means that you will eat less food as you will feel full quickly. This process helps you lose weight.

This band can be adjusted by adding or extracting fluid in a balloon around the band. The surgeon places a port under the skin of your abdomen. A tube links from the port to the band around your stomach. Then port is injected with fluid. As the fluid goes through the tube into the balloon and around your band, the stomach gets squeezed. With each visit to the hospital, a small amount of fluid is usually added, and your weight loss is checked. If you feel the band has become too tight, the fluid will be removed.

Who are the Eligible Candidates for Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding?

LAGB is advised for people who have tried many weight loss methods without any success. Your doctor may advise you to go for LAGB if you have a body mass index (BMI) over 40. Your doctor may also suggest LAGB if you have a BMI in the range of 35 to 40, and you are suffering additional health problems such as type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, or heart disease.

  • The gastric band is placed at the upper part of the stomach, and then the sutures are put into position.
