Fibroscan Test For Liver Related Diseases

Fibroscan Test For Liver Related Diseases
Reading Time: 3 minutes

Fibroscan is a specialized ultrasound machine for the diagnosis of liver-related diseases. It measures fibrosis and steatosis (fatty change) in the liver. Ultrasound elastography is a non-invasive device that allows doctors to figure out the amounts of scar tissue and fatty tissue present in the liver. It is a non-invasive technique (a patient can return home immediately after the scan, as no incision is made). Also, Fibroscan being fast and reliable is particularly useful as an alternative to liver biopsy.

A Fibroscan machine works like an ultrasound; a small handheld probe is placed on the lower right section of the patient’s ribcage. This probe then emits a shear wave into the patient’s body.  The machine records the waves reflected off the patient’s liver and calculates the amount of scar tissue present in the liver with a screen attached to it which displays the results.

Fibroscan can be used alone or with other tests (such as blood tests, imaging scans, or biopsies)  that also measure scarring or fatty change in your liver. Our doctors at Yashoda Hospital &  Research Centre, Nehru Nagar, Ghaziabad, may recommend Fibroscan to patients who have been diagnosed with or are being monitored for hepatitis C (HCV), chronic hepatitis due to hepatitis B (HBV), a combination of hepatitis C and HIV, alcoholic liver disease, non-alcoholic hepatic steatosis (fatty liver), liver cirrhosis, chronic cholestatic diseases and monitoring for pre-and post-liver transplant patients. The entire procedure takes less than 10 minutes and with our world-class facilities at Yashoda Hospital & Research Centre, Nehru Nagar, Ghaziabad, the patient can immediately go back home or to work since there is no pain, no injection, no cutting as well as no anesthesia required for this procedure.

The liver is responsible for filtering blood, removing toxins, and metabolizing drugs. It is an irreplaceable and vital organ needed for our body to function properly. If your liver is damaged or injured, it becomes difficult for the body to perform daily tasks. As a result, a person whose liver is severely injured will gradually become very ill.

Fibroscan Fibrosis Score

Your medical history and fibrosis results determine your fibrosis score.

  • Fibrosis score F0 to F1: No liver scarring or mild liver scarring
  • Fibrosis score F2: Moderate liver scarring
  • Fibrosis score F3: Severe liver scarring
  • Fibrosis score F4: Advanced liver scarring (cirrhosis)

Your fibrosis results may be over-estimated (your liver may have less scarring than what  your fibrosis result says) if you have:

  • Liver inflammation. This can be caused by a recent liver illness or drinking alcohol.
  • Benign (non-cancerous) or cancerous tumors in your liver.
  • Liver congestion (when your liver is too full of blood or other fluids). Heart failures are significantly caused by this congestion.

Your Fibroscan results may also be less accurate if you have:

  • A body mass index (BMI) higher than 30 (obesity)
  • A build-up of fluid in your abdomen (ascites)
  • Too little bile flowing out of your liver (biliary obstruction)
