ALL ABOUT PERIODS & ROLE OF CONTRACEPTIVES

Menstruation refers to the regular shedding of the uterine lining (endometrium) in the form of blood and clots through the vagina. It occurs every month in females with a healthy uterus. The menstrual cycle ranges from 21 to 35 days from the count of one period to the first day of the next period. It is an indicator that the female is not pregnant and the body can shed the healthy walls of uterus and begin preparing for the next month.

During the menstrual cycle, the hormones in the female reproductive system make eggs in the ovaries to mature. When an egg is mature, it means that it is ready to be fertilized by a sperm. Simultaneously, these hormones also thicken the walls of the uterus, therefore preparing it for a fertilized egg to provide it nutrition and make a safe space for the embryo to develop in it.

If the mature egg is not fertilized by a sperm cell; the body does not need the thick lining of the uterus. Hence, the lining breaks down and blood, nutrients, tissue (in the form of clots) flow out of the body through the vagina.

The period blood flow can be light or heavy, depending from person to person. It may also vary in color (different shade of red), as per the person’s nutritional levels or hormonal levels. Different colors of period blood can signify different things.
