Ovarian cancer develops when abnormal cells grow in the ovaries and begin to multiply uncontrollably. The ovaries are small organs in the female reproductive system that produce eggs every month.

Ovarian cancer affects thousands of women every year. While symptoms are not so evident in the beginning stages, certain early signs that tend to go unnoticed may include:
- Constant pelvic or abdominal pain: Frequent batches of dull aches or discomfort in the pelvic region. These are unrelated to the menstrual cycle.
- Vaginal discharge: In the form of abnormal bleeding, irrespective of menstrual cycle or menopause.
- Bowel changes: Such as sudden constipation or diarrhoea.
- Change in appetite: Even after little consumption of food.
- Frequent urination: And persistent urgency for it.
- Bloating: And change in abdominal size.
- Unexplained fatigue.
Causes of Ovarian Cancer
While the exact cause of ovarian cancer hasn’t been outlined yet, certain risk factors such as getting older, being over the age of 60 years, obesity, endometriosis, family history or having children at a later stage in life are linked to it.
Tests & Diagnosis of Ovarian Cancer
Screenings such as pelvic floor exam is conducted, followed by a thorough exam of the ovaries, fallopian tube and nearby tissues.
CT scan, MRI, X-rays are conducted to get detailed results and see if cancer cells have developed and grown and spread to other tissues or lymph and lymph nodes.
Blood tests, combined with other ultrasounds may also be recommended.
Treatment of Ovarian Cancer
Treatment for ovarian cancer is similar to any other type of cancer – radiation, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy or clinical trials.
Surgery is suggested in which the ovaries are removed in case there is abnormal growth of cancer cells in and around them and the risk of metastasising is higher.
- Radiation therapy: Is rarely used for ovarian cancer. It uses radiation beams to kill the cancer cells.
- Chemotherapy: May be suggested before or after the surgery to target and kill cancer cells by using specific drugs.
- Hormone therapy: Blocks hormones, slowing and stopping the cancer from growing.
- Laparoscopy: Is another type of surgical procedure in which a thin camera is placed through a small incision in the abdomen and using the scope as guide, the surgeon assesses the cancer, stages biopsy or removed the ovarian tumours from the female’s body.
