In a first-of-its-kind case for Ghaziabad, the doctors at Yashoda Hospital, Nehru Nagar have successfully saved the life of a 31-year-old man from a fatal road accident on the Meerut Expressway. The near-death experience had left the man critically injured, with an open thoracic wound exposing his left lung and heart and multiple rib fractures.

A case of Road Traffic Accident (RTA), the patient was brought to Yashoda Hospital, Nehru Nagar on May 24, 2026 at around 7 AM and was immediately shifted to Emergency. The man was also in shock on arrival due to the severity of the injuries and blood loss.

The patient was stabilized with emergency trauma care, including control of bleeding through wound packing, blood transfusion and insertion of a chest drain to remove blood and air from the chest cavity. The surgery was headed by Dr. Prasanna Ramana Arumugaswamy, Gastrointestinal and Minimal Access Surgeon (MS AIIMS, MCh AIIMS) along with allied departments comprising Dr. Ajay Panwar (Senior Consultant, Orthopedic Trauma and Robotic Knee & Hip Replacement Surgery), Dr. Prof. (Col.) Mohd. Alam Parwaz (Director, Plastic, Reconstructive & Cosmetic Surgery) and Dr. Brijesh Prajapat (HOD, Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine). The Emergency Care team led by Dr. Dileep Kumar, the ICU team under Dr. Kamaldeep Yadav and Dr. (Lt. Col.) Praveen Kumar, the anesthesia team headed by Dr. Mukesh Kumar Garg and Dr. Pankaj Agarwal, HOD, Radiology, also played a crucial role in the patient’s successful recovery.

The complex surgery involved Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS), evacuation of blood from the chest cavity, repair and cleaning of the open chest wound, fixation of the dislocated sternoclavicular joint, stabilization of fractured ribs, chest tube placement and reconstructive closure of the wound. Following surgery, the patient was closely monitored in the ICU and remained on ventilatory support. Serial chest X-rays showed gradual re-expansion of the collapsed lung, following which the patient was successfully extubated and continued to make steady progress.

After a challenging hospital course and coordinated efforts by multiple specialties, the patient recovered well and was discharged in stable condition.

Commenting on the case, Dr. Prasanna R. Arumugaswamy said, “This was one of the most challenging trauma cases we have managed in which the vital organs were exposed. Timely intervention, multidisciplinary teamwork and advanced surgical techniques helped us save his life and achieve a successful outcome. The use of VATS can lead to improved outcomes in complex thoracic surgery cases by minimizing the morbidity associated with open thoracotomy.”

Dr. (Maj.) Sachin Dubey, Medical Director, Yashoda Hospital, Nehru Nagar, said, “This case highlights the importance of having a comprehensive trauma ecosystem where emergency medicine, critical care, surgery and allied specialties work seamlessly together to deliver timely, life-saving treatment.”

The successful management of this complex trauma case once again underscores Yashoda Hospital’s advanced capabilities in handling high-risk emergencies and delivering comprehensive, multidisciplinary care under one roof.
