They help in preventing the body from getting an infection and perform a defense mechanism as such. Tonsillitis is a condition in which the tonsils become infected. Tonsillitis can occur at any age and is particularly common in childhood.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Risk factors of tonsillitis<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Young age. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children are most commonly affected by tonsillitis; the one caused by bacteria is most common in children aged between 5 years to 15 years.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Frequent exposure to germs. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">School-aged children are in close contact with other students and frequently exposed to viruses or bacteria that can cause tonsillitis.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Symptoms of tonsillitis<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of tonsillitis include a sore throat, swollen tonsils, difficulty in swallowing, tender lymph nodes on the sides of the neck and fever.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most cases of tonsillitis are caused by infection through a virus, but bacterial infections also may a l s o cause tonsillitis. For example, strep throat is caused by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Streptococcal <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bacteria, and it is contagious.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Tonsil Conditions<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acute tonsillitis: A virus or bacteria infects the tonsils, leading to swelling and a sore throat. The tonsil may develop white (exudate) or a grey coating.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronic tonsillitis: Persistent infection of tonsils, sometimes as a result of repeated episodes of acute tonsillitis.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peritonsillar abscess: An infection that creates a pus pocket next to the tonsil, pushing it towards the opposite side. Peritonsillar abscess is a critical condition and must be drained urgently.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acute mononucleosis: Usually caused by the Epstein-Barr virus, \u201cmono\u201d, causes severe swelling in the tonsils, rash, fever, sore throat, and fatigue.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strep throat: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Streptococcus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a bacterium, infects the throat. Fever and neck pain often accompany the sore throat.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enlarged (hypertrophic) tonsils: The size of the airway is reduced due to large tonsils, making snoring or sleep apnea more likely.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tonsillitis (tonsil stones): Tonsil stones, or tonsillitis, are formed when trapped debris hardens, or calcifies.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Other signs and symptoms of tonsillitis infection include the following:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Fever<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Bad breath<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Congestion and a runny nose<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Swollen lymph nodes in front of the neck<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Red, swollen tonsils with patches of pus (white spots)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Painful swallowing (odynophagia) or difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of voice or muffled voice<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Abdominal pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Coughing up blood<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> With enlarged tonsils, breathing through the nose may be difficult and symptoms may include:<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Breathing through the mouth, especially in children<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Noisy breathing in the day; snoring at night<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Nasal-sounding voice<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are having any of the sign or symptoms mentioned above, you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yashodahealthcare.com\/book-an-appointment\/\">book an appointment at Yashoda Hospital<\/a>.
