The mouth, oesophagus, stomach and intestines (small and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">large) are all a part of the GI tract. It is divided into upper and lower gastrointestinal <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tract. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Various hormones are released by the cells of the gastrointestinal tract regulate the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">digestive process. Everything we eat moves from the mouth to the stomach through a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tube-like structure called oesophagus. The food in the stomach is then digested and this <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">digested food moves towards the intestines for absorption. After absorbing all the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nutrients, the waste is removed from the body via anus in the form of faeces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastrointestinal cancer or tumor can develop in any of the organs of the gastrointestinal <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tract when the cells start growing abnormally due to a sudden change in the DNA. The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reason for this sudden change can be either genetic or due to mutation. This cancer is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the most common type of cancer worldwide. However, it is curable if detected at an<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">early stage.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Types of gastrointestinal (GI) cancers<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oesophageal cancer, gastric (stomach) cancer, colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, liver <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cancer (also hepatocellular carcinoma) are some of the common types of cancers that<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">affect the gastrointestinal tract.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, neuroendocrine tumors, gastrointestinal stromal tumors and anal <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cancers are some of the rare types of GI cancers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Various studies show that people who smoke cigarettes, consume alcohol and\/or follow<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an unhealthy diet and lifestyle are more prone to develop this disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several specific underlining conditions (co-morbidities) such as gastroesophageal reflux <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">disease in the oesophagus, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Helicobacter pylori <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">infection in the stomach (peptic ulcers), <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diabetes in the pancreas, inflammatory bowel disease in the large intestine (colon and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rectum), hepatitis B or C virus infection or cirrhosis in the liver may also result in the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">formation of tumors.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Signs &amp; symptoms of gastrointestinal cancer<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The person may experience various signs and symptoms, depending upon the part of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GI tract that is affected:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with oesophageal cancers find it difficult to swallow.
