Fibroscan<\/strong> is a specialized ultrasound machine for the diagnosis of liver-related diseases. It measures fibrosis and steatosis (fatty change) in the liver. Ultrasound elastography is a non-invasive device that allows doctors to figure out the amounts of scar tissue and fatty tissue present in the liver. It is a non-invasive technique (a patient can return home immediately after the scan, as no incision is made). Also, Fibroscan being fast and reliable is particularly useful as an alternative to liver biopsy.<\/p>\n

A Fibroscan machine works like an ultrasound; a small handheld probe is placed on the lower right section of the patient\u2019s ribcage. This probe then emits a shear wave into the patient\u2019s body.\u00a0 The machine records the waves reflected off the patient\u2019s liver and calculates the amount of scar tissue present in the liver with a screen attached to it which displays the results.<\/p>\n

Fibroscan can be used alone or with other tests (such as blood tests, imaging scans, or biopsies)\u00a0 that also measure scarring or fatty change in your liver.
