These are growth, also known as leiomyomas, made of muscle and tissue and are usually not cancerous. Uterine fibroids can grow as a single nodule or in a cluster. They can be as small as watermelon seeds and clusters can range in size from 1 millimetre to more than 20 millimetres.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Types of Uterine Fibroids<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>There are different types of uterine fibroids depending upon their location and how they attach \u2013<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Intramural Fibroids:<\/strong> These are the most common types of uterine fibroids that are embedded into the muscular wall of the uterus.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Submucosal Fibroids:<\/strong> These grow under the inner lining of the uterus.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Subserosal Fibroids:<\/strong> These grow under the inner lining of the outer surface of the uterus and can become quite large in size, growing into the pelvis.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pedunculated Fibroids:<\/strong> These are the least common type of fibroids and tend to attach to the uterus with a stalk or stem. They resemble mushrooms in structure because they have a stalk and a wider top surface.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Symptoms and Causes of Uterine Fibroids <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>While most symptoms of uterine fibroids are not that noticeable, the larger ones can cause concern:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Excessive pain and bleeding during periods<\/li>\n<li>Bleeding between periods<\/li>\n<li>Abdominal bloating<\/li>\n<li>Frequent urination<\/li>\n<li>Painful sex<\/li>\n<li>Lower back pain<\/li>\n<li>Inability in emptying the bladder at once<\/li>\n<li>Chronic vaginal discharge<\/li>\n<li>Constipation and pressure in the rectum<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While the exact cause of uterine fibroids is not known, doctors believe that the hormonal imbalance of oestrogen and progesterone in females, plays a role. The extra fluid helps create a clearer image of the uterus, which is examined during a standard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yashodahealthcare.com\/radiology\/subspeciality\/ultrasound\">ultrasound<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Laparoscopy<\/strong><br \/>\nIn this procedure, a small incision is made in the lower abdomen and a thin, flexible tube with a camera at the end is inserted to look closely at the internal organs.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Treatment Options Available for Uterine Fibroids<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Treatment for uterine fibroids ranges from medications to surgery. The best treatment option should be taken after proper consultation with the doctor regarding any future plans for pregnancy.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Medications for Treating Uterine Fibroids<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Over-The-Counter (OTC) Pain Medications \u2013<\/strong> These help manage pain and discomfort caused by fibroids.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Iron Supplements \u2013<\/strong> In case of excessive bleeding, iron supplements are recommended.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH) Agonists \u2013<\/strong> These medications help shrink the f ibroids, making it easier to remove them. Their effect, however, is temporary and if the patient stops taking them, the fibroids might grow back.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Birth Control \u2013<\/strong> Sometimes birth control also helps with the symptoms of fibroids like heavy bleeding between periods and cramps specifically.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Oral Therapy \u2013<\/strong> They can manage heavy uterine bleeding in women who have not experienced menopause with symptomatic uterine fibroids. Elagolix is a new oral therapy that helps with this. Tranexamic acid is another such example.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Surgery for Treating Uterine Fibroids <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>When the fibroids tend to grow in size, causing discomfort and disruption in life, surgery becomes the most viable treatment option.
