It may vary in size and texture and can be painful<br \/>\nin some cases. While most of the breast lumps are benign, they have tendency to develop into a<br \/>\ntumour if not attended to in time.<\/p>\n<h2>How do you evaluate a Breast Lump?<\/h2>\n<p>A breast lump evaluation is conducted to examine the lumps present in the breasts which are later<br \/>\ntested to check for any possible risks of tumours. Breast lumps can be evaluated via the following<br \/>\nimaging tests:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yashodahealthcare.com\/blogs\/what-do-you-mean-by-a-mammogram\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Mammogram<\/strong> <\/a>\u2013 In this, low-dose X-rays are used to examine the breasts. It involves exposing<br \/>\nthe breasts to a small amount of ionized radiation in order to obtain pictures of their insides.<br \/>\nMammogram can be \u2013 2D (that generate two single images of the breasts), or 3D that<br \/>\ngenerates an all-round image of the breasts in \u201cslices\u201d to assess denser breast tissues.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Breast Ultrasound<\/strong> \u2013 It involves the use of sound waves to create pictures of the insides of<br \/>\nbreasts. They capture images of areas of the breast that may be difficult to see in<br \/>\nmammography. It also helps determine whether the breast lump is solid or fluid.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Breast MRI<\/strong> \u2013 Use of a powerful magnetic field, radiofrequency pulses and a computer that<br \/>\nproduces detailed pictures of the insides of the breasts is breast MRI. Lumps that generally<br \/>\ngo unnoticed in mammography and ultrasound are evaluated in the MRI.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Types of Biopsies for Detecting Breast Lumps<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If all the above-mentioned imaging tests are unable to prove whether the lump is benign or not, a<br \/>\nbiopsy may be recommended. Following types of biopsies may be conducted:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ultrasound-Guided Biopsy<\/strong> \u2013 In this, an ultrasound imaging is used to find the lump. The<br \/>\nradiologist advances a thin sampling needle into the lump to remove some tissue and<br \/>\nevaluates it under a microscope. It is usually quick in process but the pathology results might<br \/>\ntake a few days.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stereotactic Biopsy (X-Ray Guided)<\/strong> \u2013 This procedure is conducted under a digital<br \/>\nmammography X-ray machine to study the area under concern. The radiologist inserts a<br \/>\nsampling needle inside the lump and extracts thin tissue samples to evaluate them further.<\/li>\n<li><strong>MRI-Guided Biopsy<\/strong> \u2013 While the area of concern is under an MRI scan, the radiologist<br \/>\nextracts tissue samples from it and sends in for further evaluation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Treatment of Cancerous Breast Lumps<\/h3>\n<p>If a lump is cancerous, surgery is usually performed to remove it from the breast.
