They can occur in any bone of the body, but are most commonly<br \/>\nfound in the thigh bone, shin or upper arm.<\/p>\n<h2>Types of Bone Cancer<\/h2>\n<p>Depending on the types of cells and tissues where the cancer starts, bone cancer can be<br \/>\nclassified into three main types:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Osteosarcoma<\/strong> \u2013 This type of cancer develops in the cells where the new bone tissues<br \/>\nform.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ewing sarcoma<\/strong> \u2013 In this, the tumour develops in the bone and its surrounding soft<br \/>\ntissues.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chondrosarcoma<\/strong> \u2013 In this, the tumour develops in the soft connective tissue \u2013 the<br \/>\ncartilage that allows movement between the joints and bones.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Other rare types of bone cancer include \u2013<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Chordoma &#8211;<\/strong> Tumour found in spine or base of the skull<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fibrosarcoma &#8211;<\/strong> Tumours that start in the fibrous connective tissue at the end of the<br \/>\nbones<\/li>\n<li><strong>Giant Cell Tumour &#8211;<\/strong> Noncancerous tumours that get cancerous<\/li>\n<li><strong>Undifferentiated Pleomorphic Sarcoma &#8211;<\/strong> Aggressive tumours that start in the soft<br \/>\ntissue and bones<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What Causes Bone Cancer?<\/h2>\n<p>There are several risk factors that cause bone cancer in individuals \u2013<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>History of previous cancer treatment<\/strong> \u2013 Radiation therapy or chemotherapy drugs<br \/>\nused to treat cancer in patients, may act as a trigger in developing bone cancer in the<br \/>\nnear future.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Benign bone conditions<\/strong> \u2013 Although highly rare in nature, having a noncancerous<br \/>\nbone disease can also lead to the development of cancer cells in the bones.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Genetic factors<\/strong> \u2013 Inheriting genetic mutation that cause certain diseases like Li\ufffeFraumeni Syndrome or retinoblastoma may also lead to bone cancer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What are the Signs and Symptoms of Bone Cancer?<\/h2>\n<p>In most of the cases, people with bone cancer do not show any signs, except for feeling a<br \/>\npainless lump. The most common symptoms of bone cancer include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pain in the bones that becomes gradual and persistent<\/li>\n<li>A lump in the affected area that may feel hard or soft<\/li>\n<li>Unexplained swelling in the affected area<\/li>\n<li>Fever and fatigue<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty in carrying out basic movements<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Diagnosis and Treatment of Bone Cancer<\/h2>\n<p>Diagnosing bone cancer involves regular imaging tests such as X-Ray, CT Scan or MRI Scan.<br \/>\nThese are then assessed to get more information about the location and size of the tumour.<br \/>\nA healthcare provider or radiologist may also conduct a biopsy, extracting a tissue sample<br \/>\nfrom the affected area of the bone and assessing it in the laboratory.<\/p>\n<p>Treatment of bone cancer depends on the stage of its spread. Stage 1 indicates that the<br \/>\ntumour is low-grade and has not spread. Stage 2 indicates high-grade tumours that have not<br \/>\nspread. Stage 3 indicates the spread of tumour to other regions.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Limb-Sparing Surgery<\/strong> \u2013 The most common treatment for bone cancer involves<br \/>\nsurgically removing the tumour and some healthy tissue around the bone. The<br \/>\naffected bone is then repaired or rebuilt with artificial or real bone grafts.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Amputation<\/strong> \u2013 Rarest of the cases, sometimes the entire limb has to be surgically<br \/>\nremoved to prevent the spread of cancer to other parts of the body. In such cases,<br \/>\nthe patient is rehabilitated with an artificial\/prosthetic limb.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Radiation and Chemotherapy<\/strong> \u2013 These may be advised to shrink and destroy the<br \/>\ncancer cells completely from the body.
