People undergo this procedure when the soft tissue inside the root\u00a0 canal that contains blood vessels, nerves and connective tissues, becomes swollen or infected.\u00a0 This treatment eliminates the inflammation and decontaminates the tooth from microbial\u00a0 infection caused due to deep decay, repeated dental procedures, and a crack or injury to the\u00a0 tooth.<\/p>\n<h2>Why does tooth pulp need to be removed?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When bacteria begin to multiply on the damaged pulp inside the pulp chamber, it causes an\u00a0 infection or abscess tooth (pus filled pocket at the end of the roots of the tooth). After this, a local anesthesia will be injected into the gums which may cause a\u00a0 sharp pinch or burning sensation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(The local anesthesia will only numb the affected area while the patient will remain awake\u00a0 during the whole procedure.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Step two:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To keep the area near the affected tooth dry and free from saliva, the dentist may place a thin\u00a0 sheet of rubber or vinyl called a dental dam.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Step three:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This step may include drilling a small hole from behind the tooth to get an access to the pulp\u00a0 chamber and root canal for treatment.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Step four:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the tooth is still numb, the dentist will remove the damaged and infected part of the\u00a0 tooth through a small hole drilled by using specially designed instruments. After the removal of\u00a0 the damaged parts, the area is cleaned out using a series of root canal files.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Step five:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After scrapping and scrubbing the infected tooth, the debris are flushed away by spraying water\u00a0 or sodium hypochlorite solution and the canal is disinfected by using antiseptic and\u00a0 antibacterial solution. The dentist may also apply a coat of some topical antibiotic to prevent\u00a0 reinfection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Step six:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once the canal is thoroughly cleaned, the dentist will fill and seal the tooth with a material\u00a0 called \u201cgutta-percha\u201d. This material will ensure that the tooth is completely sealed and will\u00a0 protect it from further contamination.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Step seven:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This concluding stage may involve further restoration of the tooth. A metal or inert material\u00a0 crown is placed over the tooth to protect it from further damage.
