Introduction

Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) in children is a term used for breathing difficulties during sleep. It can range from simple snoring to complete intermittent cessation of breath during sleep, also called Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).  The prevalence of SDB in children is estimated to be approximately 2-10% in the 3-7 years of age group.

Causes of Sleep-Disordered Breathing (SDB) in Children

The most common causes of Sleep-Disordered Breathing (SDB) in children include enlarged adenoids and tonsils. Among other causes of SDB, we have obesity, an abnormally smaller jaw, a large tongue, and neuromuscular deficits such as cerebral palsy. These children become habitual mouth breathers and in the long term can develop facial changes such as a pinched nose, crowding of teeth, and narrow high arch palate, which is also known as adenoid facies.

Complaints & Symptoms of Sleep-Disordered Breathing (SDB) in Children:

The most common symptoms of Sleep-Disordered Breathing (SDB) include snoring, sleep disturbances, breathing from the mouth, running nose, ear infection, irritability, bed-wetting, learning difficulties, and poor growth.

Identifying children with SDB early and instituting treatment on time is important to prevent cardiac and facial development problems in the future course of life.

Enlarged tonsils and adenoids are the most common causes of Sleep-Disordered Breathing (SDB).
