Juvenile Nasopharyngeal Angiofibroma: Symptoms and Treatment
Reading Time: 2 minutes

Juvenile Nasopharyngeal Angiofibroma or JNA is a noncancerous but aggressive vascular tumour behind the nose and paranasal sinuses. These rare tumours can grow rapidly and cause serious damage to the surrounding structures, including the eye sockets, skull bones and even the brain. This condition is exclusively seen in teenage boys (over 10 years of age) and adult males (mostly 18-25 years of age).

Symptoms of Juvenile Nasopharyngeal Angiofibroma (JNA):

Typical symptoms of JNA progress over time, starting from nasal blockage, runny nose, and nosebleeds. In advanced cases of JNA, additional complications like facial swelling, eye protrusion, headaches, vision problems (including double vision), and hearing loss can also develop. These locally aggressive tumours need to be detected and treated early because left untreated, JNA can result in severe nasal bleeding, loss of smell, vision loss, breathing difficulty and change in mental status.

For individuals experiencing these symptoms, consultation with an experienced ENT skull base surgeon specializing in nasal tumour treatment is crucial. Following a thorough ENT examination and nasal endoscopy, imaging tests like CT scans and MRIs will be necessary to determine the tumour’s extent.

Treatment of Juvenile Nasopharyngeal Angiofibroma (JNA):

Surgery is the treatment of choice in case of JNA with the aim of complete removal. Most of the tumours can be removed by a minimally invasive endoscopic approach itself; this method is also cosmetically acceptable as it has less morbidity and reduced hospital stay as compared to an open approach.

For extensive tumours, multi-stage surgeries can be performed to reduce the bleeding during the surgery, along with embolization / blocking of the feeding vessels, which may be done in certain cases.
