Dental Implants: Surgery, Types, Risks and Procedure
Reading Time: 5 minutes

A dental implant is a procedure to replace the tooth roots with a metallic, screw-like structure and replace the defected or missing teeth with artificial teeth that resemble and work just like the real ones.

A dental implant can be a better option as compared to dentures or bridgework that do not fit well and can in turn offer a superior choice when an absence of normal teeth roots do not permit built dentures or bridgework tooth substitutions.

The dental implant surgery will depend on the type of implant and state of your jawbone. The dental screw structure will make the bone heal tightly around the implant. Since this bone recuperation requires time, the cycle can go on for a couple of months.

Why is Dental Implant Done?

Dental implants can be precisely positioned in your jawbone, where they will fill in as the foundations of missing teeth. Unlike fixed bridges or dentures, titanium implants bond directly with your jawbone in a process called osseointegration. This strong connection prevents them from slipping, loosening, or causing damage to the bone.

Additionally, titanium is highly resistant to corrosion, unlike natural teeth which can decay. This eliminates the risk of rotting associated with traditional bridgework.

By and large, dental implants might be ideal for you if you:

  • Have at least one missing teeth
  • Have a jawbone that has completed full development
  • Have sound oral tissues
  • Do not have ailments that will influence the bone recuperation
  • Cannot or are reluctant to wear dentures
  • Want to improve your speech

Types of Dental Implants:

There are two significant types of dental implants:

Endosteal Dental Implant (in the bone)

Endosteal implants are the most well-known type of dental implants.

They typically look like little screws. These implants are produced using body-safe materials like titanium.

Endosteal implants can be carefully embedded into the jawbone where they will replace the tooth roots. One implant can be used to anchor one or a few teeth.

Subperiosteal Dental Implant (on the bone)

This kind of implant is used when there is a lack of healthy jawbone to take an endosteal implant.

Subperiosteal implants are embedded under the gum; however they do penetrate the jawbone. These implants can be put above or on the bone, as opposed to “in it”.

Risks of Dental Implants:

Just like any other surgery, a dental implant surgery also represents certain complications. These issues may be rare, however, when they do happen, they are normally minor and can be effortlessly treated. Risks of dental implants may include:

  • Infection at the implant site
  • Injury or harm to the encompassing structures, for example, different teeth or veins
  • Nerve damage, which can cause pain, or tingling in your normal teeth, gums, lips or jawline
  • Sinus issues, when dental implants set in the upper jaw distend into one of your sinus cavities.

Dental Implant Procedure: A Step-by-Step Guide

The dental implant procedure typically involves several stages, each crucial for a successful and long-lasting outcome. Here’s a breakdown of the process:

  1. Implant Placement:
  • During the surgery, your dentist will make an incision in your gum tissue to expose the jawbone.
  • Small holes are then drilled into the bone to create space for the implant post, which acts as the artificial tooth root.
  • The implant post is then inserted securely into the jawbone.
  • Depending on your needs, a temporary, removable denture may be placed for aesthetic purposes. This temporary tooth can be removed for cleaning and while sleeping.
  1. Osseointegration:
  • After the implant post is placed, a natural process called osseointegration begins. During this phase, the jawbone grows around and fuses with the implant surface. This creates a strong foundation for your new artificial tooth, mimicking the role of natural tooth roots.
  • Osseointegration takes time to complete, typically several months.
  1. Abutment Placement (Optional):
  • Once the osseointegration is complete, in some cases, a minor outpatient surgery may be needed to place the abutment (the abutment is a connector piece that serves as the foundation for the artificial tooth crown).
  • Local anaesthesia is usually used during this procedure. The dentist will reopen the gum tissue to access the implant, attach the abutment, and then stitch the gum tissue closed around it (not entirely covering the abutment).
  • In some cases, the abutment might be placed simultaneously with the implant post during the initial surgery, eliminating the need for a second procedure.
  • The abutment is visible when you open your mouth until the permanent tooth is attached. Some patients prefer a separate procedure for the abutment placement for aesthetic reasons.
  1. Healing & Artificial Tooth Selection:
  • After the abutment placement, your gums will need to heal for approximately two weeks before the artificial tooth can be attached.
  • During this healing period, new impressions will be taken of your mouth and the remaining teeth. These impressions are used to fabricate the crown. The crown placement may be delayed to ensure that your jawbone is fully healed and ready to support the new tooth.
  • Discuss with your dentist and choose the type of artificial teeth you prefer – removable, fixed (bridge), or a combination of both.
  1. Artificial Tooth Attachment:
  • Once the healing is complete and the crown is ready, your dentist will permanently attach it to the abutment, thus completing your dental implant restoration.

Aftercare:

Just like your natural teeth, implants, dentures, and gum tissues also need regular care to last longer. Here’s how to ensure a healthy smile and optimal tooth function:

  • Maintain a clean mouth: Brush and floss regularly, paying close attention to your dental work and surrounding areas.
  • Schedule regular check-ups: Visit your dentist for routine exams to monitor the health of your implants and receive professional cleanings.
  • Avoid bad habits: Skip hard candy and ice which can damage both crowns and natural teeth. Limit tooth-staining drinks like coffee and tea. If you have the habit og grinding your teeth, talk to your dentist about the treatment options.
