What is a Sinusoidal Tumour?

Sinusoidal tumours are those which emerge from the nose and paranasal sinuses (air-filled cavities lined with mucosa around the nose). These tumours can be benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous).

Prevalence of Sinusoidal Tumour:

These tumours represent around 3-5% of all head and neck cancers. Care should be taken to diagnose and treat it on time.

Types of Sinusoidal Tumours:

Sinusoidal tumours can be of two types:

  • Noncancerous Tumours: These include sinonasal papilloma, hemangioma, osteoma, fibrous dysplasia, juvenile angiofibroma, etc.
  • Cancerous Tumours: These include squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, adenoid cystic carcinoma, esthesioneuroblastoma, melanomas, etc.

Symptoms of Sinusoidal Tumours:

Symptoms include:

  • Nasal blockage
  • Pus or blood-stained discharge
  • Loss of smell
  • Headache
  • Facial heaviness
  • Eye pain / double vision
  • Swelling in the cheek
  • Loose teeth

Diagnosis of Sinusoidal Tumours:

  • Nasal endoscopy: This includes visual examination of the nasal cavity and sinuses.
  • Imaging: It includes CT scan or MRI to assess the size and location of the tumour.
  • Biopsy: This involves tissue sample removed for microscopic analysis to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment of Sinusoidal Tumours:

Sinusoidal tumours can be treated in the following ways:

  • Surgery: This remains the most preferred option for sinusoidal tumours.
  • Radiotherapy: This involves use of high-energy rays to kill cancer cells.
  • Chemotherapy: Under chemotherapy, medications are administered to destroy cancer cells.
