What is Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy?

Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is also called vertical sleeve gastrectomy, where the outer margin of the stomach is removed to restrict food intake. With the removal of the outer margin, a sleeve of the stomach is left, which is roughly the size and shape of a banana. This is the muscle that controls the emptying of food from the stomach into the intestine. Sleeve gastrectomy is purely a restrictive procedure that limits food intake.

After the surgery, the patient usually eats a small amount of food because, with the reduction in the stomach size, the patient feels full after eating few calories. Also, the surgery helps in removing the portion of the stomach that generates a hormone that is responsible for making the patient hungry.

Unlike the gastric bypass procedure, Sleeve gastrectomy is a simpler operation.

Who are the Candidates for Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy?

Here are some of the reasons that doctors suggest patients go for Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy:

  • If you have a BMI over 60, then LSG, as surgery, will be the first option so that you lose enough weight safely.
  • If you are older or have some other medical conditions such as heart, lung, or liver problems, then as a safe option, LSG is recommended.
  • Your healthcare provider may recommend LSG if you have a BMI of about 40 to 50.

What to Expect During the Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy procedure?

The Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy procedure is performed in a hospital under general anesthesia. The surgery will be performed using a laparoscopic technique, which may involve making a small three to five small incisions and getting a detailed view of the body's inside at the screen. A tube with a camera is then inserted through one of the incisions. Other incisions are used to insert surgical instruments and are used to remove about 80% of your stomach.

The surgeon will take out the outer curved part of your stomach called the fundus. After the removal of the stomach, the surgeon will close the rest of your stomach. Your stomach will take the shape of a tube or look like a banana or the sleeve of your shirt, and thus, the name "sleeve gastrectomy." The surgeon removes the fundus because they secrete a hormone called ghrelin, which are responsible for making you feel hungry. Usually, the surgery takes about 2 hours.
